The Old City Park Bank Stabilization Project   Summer 2007

Before   Showing eroding stream bank and wood chip walkway.

After   Showing stabilized stream bank and cement walkway.

The before and after pictures shown above illustrate the significant improvements that have been made to the river bank in Boyne City's Old City Park.  This is one of the largest service projects that the Friends of the Boyne River have undertaken.   It is the result of the outstanding vision and organizational talent of Nancy Cunningham, a member of the FOBR Board of Directors.   Nancy did all of the fund raising and planning for the project,  She also lined up the contractors and, with the help of her husband Dick, organized the volunteer workers that helped with the effort.

Included in the project are eight stairways to provide access to the water for fishermen.  Railings along the walkway and stairs are still to be added.  Also, beside the bridge, a canoe/kayak take out will be constructed.  An underground watering system has been installed to keep the row of native Michigan plants between the rocks and the walkway green and healthy.  The project demonstrates how native plants can be used to create a beautiful green belt.  The large rock at the left will have a plaque honoring the late Tom Sheets and Marie Zoberski, founders of the Friends of the Boyne River.

We want to thank all of our donors, both individuals and organizations, all of the contractors that did their job and more to make everything look great and all of the volunteer workers that did whatever was needed to complete the project.  We also want to thank Boyne City for their cooperation and the donation of the large rocks at the waters edge.
