The Boyne River Earthen Dam and Hydro Electric Power Plant

The dam and power plant is located about 1/4 mile east of the Dam Road Bridge over the Boyne River.  It was constructed in 1906 and has had a long history of generating power in Boyne Valley.  Today, it provides about 1/7th of the power for the Boyne USA Resort at Boyne Mountain.  Much of the information about the dam was provided by Janet Rewald, the daughter of Clarence "Stub" Rewald who operated the power plant from 1943 to 19 72.  To read a very interesting historical synopsis provided by Consumers Power  (Click here)

The three pictures below show the area of the reservoir as it was being flooded.

This logging camp and mill owned by Mr. Tan North and operated by Mr. John Dallavo was located along the Boyne River in the area that was flooded when the dam was constructed.     As the reservoir flooded, the roof of the horse barn at the old logging camp could still be seen.     The house in the distance belonged to Thomas Talboys and was located very near the north end of the dam.  The picture shows the Boyne River below the dam as it looked in 1906.
